Genentech: Building Leaders Who Think Beyond the Workplace

Quita Highsmith, Genentech Vice President, Population Health Center of Excellence, shares the impact of Leadership Council SMC's Immersion Programs.

For Genentech, leadership extends beyond its South San Francisco campus and into the community it calls home.

“Leadership Council SMC has empowered our employees to think beyond the workplace, “said Quita Highsmith, Genentech Vice President, Population Health Center of Excellence. “Through this program, they have gained a deeper understanding of San Mateo County’s challenges and built community connections, bringing back insights and relationships that enhance our focus on serving all patients, including those in our local communities.”

That impact is echoed in the feedback we receive from our Immersion Program participants. Among Leadership Council SMC’s Class of 2025 graduates, 95% said the program improved their civic understanding, deepening their awareness of how local issues and resources connect.

Suzanne Lee, Genentech’s Director of Employee Communications and Engagement and a graduate of our inaugural Leadership CORPS Class of 2022, is one leader putting that learning into action.

“Leadership CORPS educated me on the inner workings of the County, connected me to peers in business, nonprofits, and government entities from across San Mateo County, and gave me an unparalleled network to create change for good,” says Suzanne.

The program provided Suzanne with insights to connect the dots between Genentech’s role in the local economy and the broader regional challenges. “I now have a basis of understanding on a whole range of issues the County faces, so I can be a more effective leader, participating in discussions, and helping to creatively problem-solve,” she explains.

Leadership CORPS also expanded her circle. A graduate of Leadership CORPS inaugural Class of 2022, Suzanne continues to collaborate with peers who share a deep commitment to the region’s success.

“I feel really lucky to have relationships with leaders from all sectors of San Mateo County,” she added.

Suzanne continues to champion Leadership Council SMC and its mission, and offers advice for current and future participants: “Prioritize attending,” she urges. “Every Learning Day is so valuable. Step away from your day-to-day responsibilities, be present, and take time to get to know as many classmates as you can. This is a diverse group of leaders making a difference for their organizations and the County.”

As more corporate leaders like Suzanne lean into community learning and collaboration, the impact multiplies. By engaging with Leadership Council SMC, Genentech and its leaders are helping build a stronger, more connected San Mateo County—one where informed, cross-sector leadership drives both business success and community well-being.
