Executive Director Search

CO-PRESIDENTS' LETTER

Dear Leadership Council SMC Community,

As Leadership Council SMC begins its sixth year of leadership programs, we are reflecting with gratitude and pride on all that this community has built together.

Today, our community includes nearly 400 alumni, two 10-month Leadership Immersion programs, an expanding portfolio of LEAD Local professional development programs, and a broad network of partners committed to strengthening leadership and civic collaboration across our region. Applications for our 2026–2027 Leadership CORPS and Emerging Leaders programs again exceeded available spaces, reflecting the growing demand for the leadership development opportunities we uniquely provide.

Our Next Chapter

With this strong foundation in place, we, together with our Board of Directors, are beginning the search for Leadership Council SMC’s first Executive Director.

This is a planned and intentional next step in the organization’s evolution. As Co-Founders, we have had the privilege of launching Leadership Council SMC, developing its programs and community, and guiding its growth. The organization is strong and now ready for an experienced nonprofit executive who can lead its next chapter by supporting staff, expanding relationships and resources, and building upon the mission and momentum we have established together. This transition plan is designed to sustain and build upon what our community values most: strong relationships, cross-sector learning, civic connection, and high-quality leadership development.

A Thoughtful Transition
This summer, we invited a group of key stakeholders to share their perspectives on the leadership qualities and priorities that will be most important in our first Executive Director. Their thoughtful input is directly shaping the leadership profile, search process, and plans for welcoming and supporting the new leader. At the same time, our Board is preparing the governance and support structures needed for the Executive Director to succeed. Throughout this process, our commitment remains clear: Leadership Council SMC’s next chapter will continue to center equity, belonging, public-private collaboration, and accessible leadership development for all of San Mateo County.

Looking Ahead
We will remain actively engaged as Co-Presidents of the Board and will work closely with the Board and the incoming Executive Director to ensure continuity and a thoughtful handoff. Once the new leader is in place, we plan to step away from the organization’s day-to-day management while continuing to provide Board leadership, institutional knowledge, and support for strategic opportunities in the region.

We will conduct the search this fall, with a goal of welcoming our new Executive Director in early 2027. We will share additional information, including the position announcement, as the process moves forward.

We are excited about what lies ahead and deeply grateful to everyone whose participation, partnership, and belief in this work have contributed to Leadership Council SMC’s success.

Leading together,
Kaarin Hardy and Margi Power
