At a time when artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping how we work, Leadership Council SMC’s latest LEAD Local workshop brought the focus back to something essential: the human skills that make leaders effective.

On April 23, leaders gathered for Leadership Presence: The Human Advantage in an AI World, led by executive leadership coach Laura Costain, Founder and CEO of On Purpose Leadership.

The session centered on a question many leaders are navigating right now: how do you show up with clarity, confidence, and impact in moments that matter?

Through a mix of practical tools and guided reflection, participants explored how to prepare for important conversations, understand what matters most to their audience, and respond in real time to the dynamics in the room. A key takeaway for participants was the clear, repeatable framework they left with to guide preparation and execution in the future.

As one participant shared, “Having a concrete framework for preparing for important conversations will be very helpful.” Others emphasized how actionable the session felt. “The presentation and tools were very practical and easy to remember,” one attendee noted.

Rather than focusing only on theory, the session emphasized application from the start. Participants were asked to come with an upcoming conversation or presentation in mind, so the tools were immediately practiced. Each person left with a concrete plan, along with strategies to approach their engagement with greater intention and confidence.

The energy in the room reflected the lively, thoughtful, and engaging conversations taking place. Attendees were local leaders who strengthened their skills while also having the opportunity to get to know peers from across the County.
